"Sailboat of
the Year" Competition
Annually,
five Chicago-area yacht clubs together with the Midwest Open Racing
Fleet, the Waukegan Yacht Club, the Great Lakes Yacht Club, and
the Michigan City Yacht Club, sponsor the sailing competition of
the Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation, Area III. The Area III
racing activities encompass buoy and offshore race series. In addition
to sailboats racing in the PHRF Fleet, Area III conducts races for
the T-10 Fleet, the J-105 Fleet, the Sidney 38 Fleet, the Farr 40
Fleet, and the Mumm 30 Fleet.
Several
of the races are designated as "Boat of the Year" races by the Chicago
Yachting Association. The championship series consists of a buoy
series and a port-to-port series. Additionally, boats that enter
the PHRF and the T-10 Class Port-to-Port and Buoy Series qualify
for an Overall Championship awarded to the winner of each class.
Trophies
for these three series are presented at the Annual Chicago
Yachting Ball.

"Power Boat of the Year" Competition
Annually, five Chicago-area yacht clubs and the Chicago
Power Squadron sponsor the Predicted Log Contests. Predicted Log
Contests provide every power boat owner, regardless of size of boat
or boating experience, an opportunity to compete, obtain a better
understanding about his boat, and increase his navigational skills.
In order to participate, you need a boat, a compass, a tachometer,
and a chart. The contest is one of accuracy, not speed. You predict
in advance the time your boat will take to get from point to point
on a designated course
then you run the course in your boat
on the day of the contest without clock or speedometer. Points are
assigned in proportion to your deviation of actual versus predicted
time. Low score wins.
Several
of the predicted log contests are designated as "Boat of the Year"
contests by the Chicago Yachting Association. These contests are
scored as a series, and trophies for First, Second, and Third-Place
winners are presented at the Annual Chicago
Yachting Ball.
